Clipsham limestone: the ideal partner in passive house design

So, what is a passive house?

 

A passive house is a building designed to use very little energy for heating or cooling. The aim is to create a comfortable indoor environment while dramatically reducing energy consumption. One of the clearest examples of this is the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre in Oxford. The building recently achieved official Passivhaus certification, becoming the largest Passivhaus-certified university building in Europe and the world’s first Passivhaus concert hall.

Clipsham limestone was selected as a key material throughout the project because it could satisfy both the architectural vision and the building’s demanding environmental targets. Around 400m³ of Clipsham block was reserved specifically for the development to ensure consistency across the façade.

The project combined traditional handset stonework with Clipsham-faced precast concrete panels, creating a building that feels rooted in Oxford’s historic architecture while delivering modern environmental performance. 

It demonstrates how traditional natural materials can work alongside advanced construction methods to support passive house standards in the UK.
