Stone for hotel construction
Our locally quarried natural limestone is the perfect hotel building material. Strong, sustainable and aesthetically pleasing, it’s a firm favourite with architects and designers. Choosing natural stone for hotel construction reduces the use of artificial materials, and keeping it local (or at least British) cuts down on your carbon footprint.
With environmental sustainability so high on the building agenda, natural stone brings many benefits. It can control sound and insulate against fluctuating temperatures. What’s more, it also offers high thermal capacitance and incredible durability. As a result, natural stone consumes little energy and needs minimal maintenance.
Better still, you can use our stone throughout the whole of your hotel building, renovation or improvement project. A stunning choice for floors and staircases, it’s similarly perfect for decorative window sills and bespoke features.
Choosing natural stone for hotel builds
We were delighted to supply 500 tonnes of Clipsham limestone for the iconic University Arms Hotel in Cambridge. The city is renowned for its widespread use of natural stone for colleges – for example, you can also see our stone used on the Jesus College West Court development.
Open since 1834, the famous University Arms hotel holds a special place in the history of Cambridge. Getting the stone right was, therefore, a key consideration. Originally, the architects specified Bath stone but supply issues meant that an alternative stone was sought. Our beautiful Clipsham limestone met all the stringent structural requirements for this project.
“In Cambridge, we aimed to create something with timeless appeal; architecture that honours the traditions and creates an aura that is present in so much of the historic architecture in the city.”
A natural choice for hotel construction
Times are changing. When building hotels and public spaces, designers are choosing to create spaces that seamlessly blend indoors and outdoors; adding plants and maximising the use of daylight, for example. As a result, natural stone and wood are now popular building materials for hotels. Including elemental materials as part of the overall design also promotes wellness and relaxation.
This doesn’t just apply to new buildings either. Hotels that need renovating or improving can benefit from the use of natural stone. Our expert team can match existing stonework to sympathetically renovate historic hotels and listed buildings.
Natural stone was the perfect choice for the new Orangery at Rushton Hall’s luxury hotel and spa in Northamptonshire. See how this stunning building took shape in our time-lapse video. It took five decades of planning before getting the green light from Historic England, who approved our Clipsham limestone for this prestigious project. Find out how it all came together in our detailed case study.
