The growing popularity of natural stone for new build developments

At Stamford Stone, we’re equally passionate about providing natural stone for new build developments as we are about historic restoration projects. For evidence of the wide variety of our work, look no further than our recent successes at the Natural Stone Awards 2018.
We love being part of these high profile new design projects and restoration work. But we’re also delighted to supply natural stone for new build developments all over the country. And we’re especially proud when we get to work on a new build development in our home town.
In this blog, we’ll share some recent examples of where we’ve supplied natural stone for new build developments in Stamford. We’ll also examine some of the most popular natural stone options available to today’s housebuilders.
Old meets new at Marshall’s Yard

As specified by planning – and requested by the architects – we supplied Clipsham walling limestone from our own quarries for this small development of luxury townhouses.

We also designed and crafted all the masonry stonework – including chimneys and porticos – to fit seamlessly with the surrounding Georgian buildings.
Original Collyweston roof tiles were salvaged from the site, and reused in the construction. Being of similar local limestone, these original roofing tiles work beautifully with our newly quarried Clipsham stone.
Down by the river…

The impressive Saxon Court housing development is located on the banks of the River Welland, on the edge of Stamford’s historic town centre.

As at Marshall’s Yard, our warm honey-coloured Clipsham walling limestone ties this new development beautifully into its historic surroundings.
Natural stone for new developments – the BIG one!

Taylor Wimpey needed walling stone for a huge 400+ homes development on the outskirts of Stamford. We were pleased to be selected to provide over 4,000 square metres of prime Clipsham walling stone for the project.

The high profile Stamford Manor development at Exeter Fields includes a 10-hectare business park and a brand new neighbourhood centre.

Why choose our natural stone for new build developments?
Natural stone is becoming a more and more popular choice with housebuilders. Here are a few of the main reasons why:
- Planning permission: in many cases, natural stone will be preferred (or even specified) by planning authorities, especially if it will complement and fit in with the existing built landscape.
- Kerb appeal: There’s nothing quite like natural stone to give a great first impression and a sense of timeless durability, even on a brand new development.
- Town and country: The tone and colour variations of our Clipsham limestone work equally well in urban and rural settings. It blends naturally with a country landscape, and adds a touch of character to town centre locations.
- Built to last: Natural stone doesn’t just look strong and durable – it really is! And its weather-resistance means it can also be used for landscaping and garden walls, creating a seamless look.
- Flexibility: Walling limestone from our quarries on the Lincolnshire limestone belt comes in a choice of four course heights – 65, 90, 115 and 140 millimetres – with a standard depth of 110 millimetres. Random lengths allow you to create a more traditional look.
- Not just walling stone: Natural limestone can also be fashioned into a wide range of masonry stone to add a touch of style to doors, windows and chimneys. And that’s just on the outside – for indoors, there are beautiful natural stone floor tiles, fireplaces and staircases.
