Our New Chapter at Stamford Stone: Planting Our Vineyard

At Stamford Stone, caring for the land has always been central to what we do. From producing ethically sourced walling stone to acting as custodians of our quarries and the surrounding landscape, we are continually looking for ways to work in harmony with the environment while securing a sustainable future.

That’s why we’re delighted to announce an exciting new venture: the planting of our very own vineyard.

Set within five acres of limestone-rich farmland surrounding our Clipsham Bidwell quarry, the vineyard marks a natural extension of our commitment to responsible land management, environmental stewardship, and thoughtful diversification.

Why a vineyard?

The agricultural playing field being what it is, diversification is more important than ever. Evolving market conditions, environmental considerations, and shifting opportunities all encourage innovative ways to make the most of the land.

Viticulture gives us an exciting opportunity to do just that. With its well-draining limestone soils, plentiful sunshine, and increasingly favourable growing conditions, Lincolnshire is proving itself as a promising region for English wine production.

While the county may not yet be as widely recognised as some of England’s established wine regions, the potential is clear. And our unique location provides ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality grapes.

Rooted in the land

The vineyard has been planted with three carefully selected grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Cabernet Jura. Our first harvest is expected in 2027, which marks the beginning of what we hope will be a long and rewarding journey.

Just as our Clipsham limestone is shaped by the geology of the land, the character of these wines will be influenced by the same limestone-rich soils that define our quarries. It is a fitting continuation of our connection to this remarkable landscape.

Sustainability at the heart of the project

The vineyard has been designed to work in harmony with its immediate surroundings, making the most of the natural characteristics of the land. By planting within limestone-rich soil and managing the site responsibly, we are supporting a balanced, long-term approach to land use that complements the wider quarry environment.

This diversification reflects a careful, considered use of space, ensuring the land continues to be productive while adapting to changing agricultural and environmental conditions.

Looking ahead

Although this is just the beginning, we are incredibly excited about what lies ahead. Establishing a vineyard is a long-term commitment, requiring patience, expertise, and care – values that closely align with our approach to quarrying premium block stone extraction, and sustainable production..

This vineyard is just one part of a much wider commitment to sustainability at Stamford Stone. From locally quarried materials – including our beautiful collections of natural stone flooring – and extensive quarry restoration programmes to water recycling, waste reduction, and ongoing work towards carbon neutrality, every decision we make is guided by a responsibility to the land we work with.
