Building on the heritage of Stamford Stone
Located on the outskirts of Stamford town, our stone quarries are ideally situated on the Lincolnshire limestone belt, providing us with an ample supply of Clipsham limestone. Stamford itself has a reputation for being one of England’s finest stone towns, as the majority of the town is built on Lincolnshire limestone and many of its key buildings feature timeless ashlar limestone.
Stone isn’t just an integral part of our business and local heritage, but also our family history. Founded in 1997, Stamford Stone is currently led by the second generation of our family business and we’re the proud owners of two local quarries; The 20-acre Clipsham Medwells Quarry which is over a century old, and the Clipsham Bidwells Quarry. Owning our own quarries provides assurance of quality and consistency in our natural stone products, as well as a guarantee of resources for the next 30 years.
The flexibility and resourcefulness that owning and operating our own quarries grants is phenomenal. Every year, we produce around 20,000 tonnes of premium grade masonry stone, 75,000 tonnes of block stone for flooring and aggregate and up to 40,000 m² of walling stone and 26,000 m² of flooring stone. It’s no surprise, therefore, that we are one of the country’s leading stone suppliers for prestigious architectural projects.
Our quarries and production facilities
Acquiring the Clipsham Medwells Quarry in 2001 secured our supply of Clipsham limestone, and after taking over the Clipsham Bidwells Quarry and Clipsham Quarry Company in 2018, we became the exclusive global supplier of Clipsham limestone. Now, we are able to provide housebuilding, commercial and conservation projects with a wide variety of natural stone products. The consistency of our stone is assured, especially as the beds at Clipsham Medwells are similar in composition and colour, making them perfectly suited to providing uniform block and walling stone for large projects.
Our state-of-the-art production facilities allow us to combine the aged quality of Clipsham limestone with innovative cutting equipment like our CNC machine, alongside expert sawing and cropping techniques. The result is outstanding products like our Ashlar cladding pieces, which can be used for construction, lightweight cladding, specialist masonry and bricklaying. We also installed a fully automated Donatoni tile line which allows us to produce 1000 m² of limestone flooring tiles per week.
Our restoration programme and renewal plan aim to preserve the landscape surrounding our facilities and sustainably produce our natural stone resources for many years to come.

Though we’re proud to be a local stone supplier for projects around the East Midlands, including Peterborough Cathedral and Rushton Hall, you can also find our limestone proudly displayed across the country. Our projects span some of the most quintessentially British buildings like Windsor Castle, the Houses of Parliament, and the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, demonstrating the diverse applications of Clipsham limestone.
