University Arms Hotel

Project Details

Originally open in 1834, this historic hotel enjoyed an eagerly awaited relaunch in the summer of 2018 following a major £80 million refurbishment.

Overlooking Parker’s Piece, the aim was to create something with timeless appeal in keeping with the rest of this historic city where stone is such an important feature. Therefore, we were thrilled to have contributed more than 500 tonnes of individually selected blocks of our Clipsham limestone, each weighing between five and 10 tonnes, as specified by the architects. Best use was made of the existing architecture, retaining features that give this iconic hotel its enduring character.

Gone are the old building’s muted 1960s and 1970s extensions. In their place sits a beautiful neoclassical exterior, complete with creamy stone pillars and soaring copper-clad turrets. The stunning new porte-cochère stands out within the streetscape, marking out the entrance in a very impressive way…

Given that we have a 900 year supply of Clipsham limestone, large-scale projects like this excite and delight us. Guests are enjoying the newly refurbished hotel, too: “The building is simply amazing in terms of structure and features.“
